Program Overview:

The Young Math Scholars Program is derived from The Calculus Project program (TCP) created in 2009 to dramatically increase the number of African American and Hispanic students who enroll in and successfully complete Calculus Honors or AP Calculus their senior year in High School.  Each K-8 school will take part in a 2 day morning enrichment session for students in grades 1-4.

 

Program Goals:

The goal of the program is to change the culture, perception and expectations for students of color in mathematics by empowering students in their learning process and developing their mathematical identity.  Students will see the joy in math in various contexts, view themselves as capable mathematicians, and develop high expectations for themselves.

 

 

Job Description:

The Young Math Scholars Leader will provide before school Math Enrichment for a cohort of 8-10 students in one of the K-8 schools.  The program will run from October through May two mornings a week from approximately 7:20-7:55 a.m. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide Math Enrichment from two mornings a week using materials developed and supplied by the Math Department and METCO
  • Plan and deliver math enrichment experiences for a range of learners
  • Coordinate with staff in building to plan for morning program 

Qualifications:

  • Must currently work in the Public Schools of Brookline
  • Familiarity with math content and practice standards
  • Belief in the mathematical potential of all students, and a commitment to helping students build a positive math identity
  • Ability to create and maintain an environment in which diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are respected
  • Experience in selecting materials and providing math enrichment
